21. ON THE SITUATION IN CHILE AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

Madrid, 3 March 2010. The Spanish Embassy and Consulate in Santiago de Chile continue to work in locating all the Spanish citizens in the areas most affected by the earthquake. To that end, two civil servants have travelled to the cities of Talca, Concepción and Curicó to aid in the work to locate Spanish and European citizens.

With the support of the Honorary Consuls and the heads of the Spanish Centres, a call has been made to Spanish citizens, via messages broadcast on the radio, at the corresponding centres of the Spanish community in the areas most affected by the earthquake, to gather information on the situation of the Spanish community and provide consular aid to those citizens that request it.

For the moment there are no confirmations of Spanish nationals among the dead. Despite the severity of the damage and the bad state of the roads and communications networks, the Spanish Embassy and Consulate will continue to do all they can until all the Spanish citizens that may be found in areas located by the earthquake have been located.

Those Spaniards that require emergency assistance should go to the corresponding Spanish centre in their area. In any case, as of tomorrow, a field hospital will be set up in the Estadio Español de Concepción to attend possible victims.

The aircraft carrying emergency aid sent by AECID has landed in Chile and it is hoped that the aid will be distributed as soon as possible.

The Spanish community in the area of Concepción numbers approximately 1,500 people.
