The passport is the document that entitles Spanish citizens to leave and enter Spanish territory. Spanish citizenship is an essential prerequisite to obtain a Spanish passport.
Spanish citizens residing abroad may request a passport from the Consular Office where they are registered, since the latter is the competent authority to issue the passport.
The passport must be requested and picked up in person by the applicant for identity verification purposes.
Spanish citizens who are registered as residents in the Consular Registry of the Embassy in Ottawa may request an ordinary passport provided that they submit the following documents:
- An signed application form available at the Consular Section. Married women must use their maiden names only.
- Expired passport or passport about to be expired, which will be returned with the new one. If this is the first request for a passport, a True Copy of a Birth Certificate from the Spanish Civil Registry where the applicant's birth is registered must be submitted.
- Valid National Identity Document, if the applicant has one.
- If the passport has been stolen or lost, an incident report from the Canadian police authorities is required.
- 1 recent coloured full-face photograph (35 x 40mm) on a white background, without dark optical lenses or any other garment that may prevent proper identification of the applicant.
- Look up the consular fee chart to find the passport fee. Only cash, money order or certified cheque payable to the Embassy of Spain will be accepted.
- When applicants are either minor or disabled, the expressed parental consent and a document identifying the person exercising the applicant’s paternal authority or custody must be submitted.
The new passport will be forwarded from Spain.
