Information on obtaining a passport

Spanish citizens registered with the Spanish consular list of Spanish nationals living abroad have the right to the issue and renewal of a Spanish passport.

Although the passport should be processed in the place of residence, Spanish citizens temporarily abroad may apply for a passport in the consular offices on their itinerary in the following circumstances:

  • Loss or theft
  • Expiry
  • Near expiry
  • Damage
  • Lack of blank pages

To be issued a passport the applicant must present an original current valid identity card, the passport to be replaced or a literal birth certificate. In the event he or she does not possess any of these documents, the consular office will consult the central authorities and once the applicant’s identity and Spanish nationality has been vouched for, it will issue the passport, the validity of which may be limited to three months.

In order to return to Spain, the consular office can, in an emergency, issue a safe-conduct valid only for return to Spain.

Applications for a passport for minors and disabled people must include the express consent of the parent or legal guardian.

Important note: The minor must always be accompanied by the person with parental authority or the guardian. This person must provide proof of identity (Spanish citizens with their Spanish national identity card and foreign nationals with a resident's card or passport), as well as proof of the parental relationship or guardianship by presenting the original birth certificate, Family Book, judicial or administrative ruling conferring this status, or any other public document that proves their guardianship or parental authority.

You may travel to countries in the European Union and to those with which Spain has an agreement with a valid Spanish identity card.

Passport-size photos must be attached to the application form provided by the consular office. In the case of loss or theft of the previous passport, the application must be accompanied by the corresponding report from the local authorities.
